What is the "Be Active" Skate-Smart Program?
The "Be Active" Skate-Smart Program is an initiative of The Rink in Bunbury, designed for inline skating. Its aim is to promote safe practices for both outdoor and indoor skating for all ages. The program is run in one-hour classes, with the objective of teaching children and adults safe techniques for skating. These techniques are suited for basic, intermediate, and advanced skating skill levels. The program has been constructed by accredited coaches and it is based on the International Inline Skating Accreditation and Skate Australia's Skater Achievement Program. We can also provide addition tuition in hockey skills, based on Skate Australia's Mighty Pucks Program.
Who runs the program?
The staff at The Rink in Bunbury run the classes, which are held on outdoor surfaces, such as schools and recreation centres, or at The Rink in Bunbury. Outdoor surfaces include well-kept basketball courts or tennis courts with a smooth asphalt surface. For individuals or small groups, they can also run on local park areas and dual cycle ways

Safety Issues in Skating
It is against the law to skate outdoors without a helmet. The classes educate participants in the types of protective gear required, the benefits of wearing the gear, and where it is legal to skate.
Many people overestimate their skating ability. The techniques taught in the classes involve safe stopping and turning skills that many so-called "experienced" skaters find difficult, because they are not used to using safe practices.
Where will The Rink travel?

What is involved and required for Outdoor Classes?
- A smooth and level asphalt surface is required to skate on, such as a basketball or tennis court. The area must be swept to remove any rock, and surfaces containing cracks or crevasses may not be usable. Undercover areas are great during wet weather.
- Tuition can be held for beginner, intermediate, or advanced skating levels.
- We provide multi-sized inline skates.
- We provide protective gear that must be worn by all participants. These are helmets, wrist guards, knee pads, and elbow pads.
- We also provide quality hockey sticks and additional gear for classes incorporating hockey skills, such as AASC classes.
- Unfortunately, we do not permit skating in wet weather, so outdoor classes may be transformed into a non-skating alternative if rain is imminent. If rain is forecast and you wish to rebook, you must phone us 3 hours before classes are due to commence. Call Susan direct on 0408356946 (Manager) or The Rink on (08) 9725 6999.
- We suggest that booking times consist of 15 minute breaks in between classes. This allows time for swapping skates and protective gear over, as well as allowing for classes running late.
- Also, we suggest that classes are booked over the same day to reduce costs incurred from travel, particularly with locations within Zone 3 and Zone 4.
- We require a teacher or adult to be present during classes for children. Adult are also welcome to assist with the class.
- A non-refundable booking fee is required when booking, and is deducted from the total balance at the end of the bookings for confirmation. An invoice will be sent to you once you have contacted us.
How much will the classes cost?
